About
On the creative side, David put himself through college working as a Disc Jockey on Northern California’s most popular radio station. David's education includes a Master's degree in Theatre from Humboldt State University with a minor in Art History and Film. During this time, he studied directing, visual literacy and composition, makeup design, lighting, and acting. He designed makeup for many of his University's stage and film projects and he directed several of his own productions. David keeps his hand in academia by giving lectures at grade schools and Universities about the film business. David has been awarded the prestigious "Distinguished Alumni Award" from his University.
David’s first job in Hollywood was in the makeup department of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice. From there he assisted five different Oscar winning makeup artists on many films. David “cut his teeth” on horror genre films of the 80’s like Shocker, Maniac Cop, Little Monsters, Something is Out There and The Flash.
He has been involved in many different award winning / nominated film and television projects over the years. His behind the scenes involvement on those quality undertakings have prepared him for his current endeavors. David has also moved into above-the-line film making by associate producing a film for Sony pictures.

David Atherton has been working in the entertainment business for over 30 years
as a Hollywood makeup artist. His feature film credits includeThe Homesman,
Adopt A Highway, As I Lay Dying, Dances with Wolves, Thunderheart,
Tombstone, Face/Off, Ladder 49, Holes and The New World to name a few.
In television, David has created the makeup for The 70s set drama series Quarry
for Cinemax and Showtime's limited series event The Good Lord Bird.
He designed makeup for the two Lonesome Dove sequels:
Streets of Laredo and Dead Man's Walk as well as many other small screen
projects.
David’s diverse background has prepared him well for bringing cinematic visions to
the screen.
Raised on a small cattle ranch in California, David worked on horseback for the
family business and competed in rodeos as a kid.
